This is for the back doors, and wouldn't help with the passenger doors.

My older van had the passenger doors get opened to forcefully a few times. The Inner and outer door skin separated (looked fine cosmetically from the outside) but the effect was the doors" grew" in size a bit. The front edge of them was now touching the rear end of the front quarter panels. In essence the body panel gap was gone. Eventually the doors got stuck shut. I had to shim the hinges/doors back wards a little so they would work again. I'm just being extra careful with my passenger doors on my "new" 2008 Van so this won't happen again.

Or maybe some other method?

That happened to my dad's van, too. Also bent the front fender where the door hit. My friend also had it happen on his E-van. The side and rear doors have door limiters that keep the door from opening too much. (As an aside, if you weren't aware, these door limiters can be overridden to allow the doors to swing fully open if needed.) The front doors don't seem to have them as the hinges are supposed to limit the forward action (but that obviously doesn’t always work).

As Bassy7 noted, that device you asked about is usually put on the rear doors of ambulances, wheelchair vans, etc., to hold the door securely open while loading.

Sounds like the same result I had. Pricey fix too. I’m a lot more care about where I park related to the wind these days!

Thanks anyway....nice ( and rather sad) to hear it happens so often though.
