Re: Wireless Indoor/Outdoor thermometer recommendation?

Mounting the remote sensor.

The Saturday morning project is mounting the Oregon Scientific remote sensor, which is 4" x 2.5" x 5/8" thick. I plan to follow the example of LenS, and put the sensor in the front licence plate holder. I don't have Aluminess bumpers or tire carriers, so I can't go that route.

The depth of the license plate bracket is 5/8", so the sensor is trapped firmly between the license plate holder and the bumper (both plastic, of course).

This means that there is no air circulation around the sensor: it's plastic-to-sensor contact on both sides. Is this a problem? Do I need to find a place where there is open space around the sensor?

(And if so... any ideas? This is a E350 passenger van.)

Thanks!

Meredith

Re: Wireless Indoor/Outdoor thermometer recommendation?

The new stations we have installed is a small cylinder with louvers that houses the thermistor. Maybe you can come up with something similar…white PVC pipe with holes??? I'm thinking there is no perfect place on the van so just pick a logical spot for when you want the most accurate reads. Someplace away from dark colors, engine or body heat, away from the PH top canvas, and where some air can get to it. If you are wanting nightime and early morning reads, probably somewhere on the back like behind the spare. If your station can handle more than one outside channel maybe put one toward the front bumper. I always wondered about using a short fiberglass antenna and attach it to the antenna somehow.

Re: Wireless Indoor/Outdoor thermometer recommendation?

Looking for an outdoor thermometer two years after these posts--has anyone solved the problem of where best to mount the sensor? Any ideas about the current generation of devices? Preferred units, manufacturers, vendors?

Re: Wireless Indoor/Outdoor thermometer recommendation?

I bought this Meade weather station a few months ago. Provides basic temp/humidity/time and you can have up to 3 remote sensors (comes with one, additional sensors are $17). I placed one remote under that back bumper with some ultra bond 3M velcro and one in side the refrigerator.

Pretty lousy way to try to cover up advertising your own product for sale. Hopefully the mods see this.

My second BS degree was in weather with a lot of the material on instrumentation. Naturally, I'm a bit of a weather nerd and appreciate accurate information, maybe more so than most.

I've often thought about how obtain accurate temp information. As others have mentioned, any place in the sun or near dark objects will skew the temp readings without airflow. However, one place that will usually have airflow in the summer is the roof fan.

Since I'm a stickler for accurate info, my plan is to go with dual Blue Sea mini OLED temp gauges (done after the SMB build). One will have the temp sensor in the roof fan intake, the other will be mounted outside, likely under the van in one of the rear corners. It's completely unnecessary, but it's one of those things that's important to me.

I don't really have a need for wind, moisture, or pressure readings. Mostly, it's just temp readings I'm concerned with.
