Is there a way for mere mortals to link directly to a given post instead of just to the topic page it is on? I searched but couldn't find anything on this. The only people I have noticed doing this are Admins so it may not be possilble for all but it would be convenient at times.

Yes, there's a tiny little icon of a page, next to the Posted date. Click that, and then copy the URL, to link directly to that post.
