2003 Ford homebrew "Moby"

Greetings all, I'd like to introduce "Moby", our '03 Quigley E350-ext. high-top home built camper. I found this van on craigslist in California in Dec. of '09. It was previously used as a water and sewer line inspection van. It was being offerd for $9000 and had 120,000 mi on a 5.4 liter V8.
I had been looking for a 4x4 van for about 9 months, and my budget was 10K. Pickings were slim,(had not found this fourm yet) so when I saw this one I jumped on it.
All work on this van was done by my girlfriend and myself over a 2 month period. est. labor of 200 hrs. Total cost so far is 15k, and rising.
I am only posting pics of the finished project here.(plenty other posts documenting builds on this site) I will however give a breif description of the work and materials used in the build.

OK here we go.

I wanted a simple open floor plan with all gear to be stored under bed.

with different configurations

Paneling is 1/4" knoty alder and stainless steel w/ 1/2" carpet pad glued to the back.
Floor is 3/4" marine ply glued and screwed with self tapping sheet metal screws then carpet w/ carpet pad.

Counter top is solid maple ply, w/ sink made of mixing bowl drains to outside. No water or cookstove instaled.

Fridge is nova kool 12V only

Headliner and upper trim is standard headliner material w/ additional fabric glued on top.

Lighting is ccf over the bed, halogen pucks over counter and led's behind mood lamps in upper trim

75W solar

marine through deck fitting

battery's are two 6 volt Trojan t-106 in series

homemade bumper 1/4'' steel

Alluminess ladder

Other notables:
1. Sound system: Alpine 4x100 amp and head unit, speakers: Infinity in the back and JL in doors
2. Fantastic fan
3. 1750w inverter (modified)
4. 15 amp shore power with charger/converter
5. Lightforce offroad lights/ work lights in back and ambulance sceen light over side doors
6. Theford porta potti
7. Tires 285/75/16
8. Safe bolted to floor
9. Vented widows and interior surrounds all around (from junk yard)

Future add on's include:
1. Roof rack
2. front bumper (probably homemade, can't justify Alluminess)
3. rear locker
4. 4.10's (currently 3.55)
5. 35" tires

Well thats about it, thanks for looking and thanks to all who have inspired me on this site. P.S Other pics in my gallery.... Take care all!

Looks great. Probably much higher quality cabinets than SMB makes.

That's really nice. Never too many build threads if you ask me.

How do you like the V8 power? Do you know how much the van weighs full for camping?

The V8 is pretty doggy at elevation, but is fine @ sea level. I'm hoping the 4.10's will make it better. Don't know about the weight, have to take it by the scales next time we're loaded up.

Very nice finish work. Quite impressive. Did you add the external door for the battery compartment or was that original?

Beautiful work. Makes me wish I had an EB.

Love the paneling and the simplicity of the sink/bowl arrangement. You have inspired me on Phase 2 of the Whitey Ford build.

Oh, for a high top...

Re: 2003 Ford homebrew "Moby"

Thank you for the positive comments. The door on the side was there when I got the van. Think they had a generator in there. There was oily gunk all over underneath the door on the inside when I got it. Worked out nicely for a battery box though.

That's a truly beautiful build out. I wouldn't mind scrolling through a more extensive photo tour of your build.
