Re: 4x4 Shifter Hole???

Thanks. Most of the upper cab is still gutted so we'll pull the column trim and check it tonight. We are headed to Fletcher tomorrow so if we need new glass it will have to wait. With what we found under our front mat it sounds as though we have body separation. If that's the case, what's a good sealant, butyl?

Re: 4x4 Shifter Hole???

The best and just about only way to seal a windshield is from the inside---as I already have typical urethane adhesive that's what I use. For a DIY though I recommend the exterior grade silicone adhesive/sealant, that available from the local Lowes, Home Depot etc.

This job would be infinitely easier if the A-Pillar trim panels are removed and the head liner dropped a bit which requires removing the over head visors. Looking at the back side of the W/S where it meets the body there is a flange upon which the W/S sets in its urethane bed. Typically there will be a void leading towards the outside of the body---its this area where sealant would be placed.

By placing some sealant then tooling or pushing it as far as possible into that void, filling as much as possible will stop any leak. Doing this completely around the 3/4 of the W/S easily reached this way tends to eliminate leaks experienced when the van is sitting still.

Re: 4x4 Shifter Hole???

Bummer, I am experiencing a leak in the same spot. I just replaced my windshield, it was needing replacement due to cracks anyway. I was assuming the seal around the windshield was the culprit. I haven't noticed any leakage yet but will be keeping a close eye on it....

Re: 4x4 Shifter Hole???

I do not think water comes in through the shifter hole but of you cross deap water. But i Think dust and noise is coming in. I also do not like the mousehole look so i found this solution.
Before the shifter went directly to the gearbox. So he had to move for some inches at the hole in the body. Not the best solution to seal it. So i made a "box" with the universal-joint in it. This box is screwed straight to the floor and the shifter is in it

DIY Kit

Absolute water tight

installed (here i still had my old interieur)

Re: 4x4 Shifter Hole???

John, I would be surprised that water comes through your shifter hole. In VivaLaVida, I made river crossing as deep as the top of the front bumper and didn't get any drop in it, even if the shifter hole isn't sealed well... It's more likely a windshield issue in my opinion.

Well done Didi! ;-)

I agree. After we got her back from Ujoint I haven't seen any more water. I need to bust out the hose to perform a couple tests but I mentioned it to them when we dropped the van off. I think we had a leak under the cowl, they may have checked and sealed things up for us.

btw, i also think that the windscreen is the problem at Johns van
