94 Coachmen Class B

I decided to start a thread with mods to my Class B.

1994 Coachmen Class B E250
5.8 with E40D 205k miles trans replaced at 160k
std dana 60 3.73

Planned mods for now.
modernize the interior grey and black
keep 2wd for now but raise it 2-4"
add full floater rear with 4.10 and some type of selectable locker

Added towing mirrors

New Shoes ---> raceline 16x8 rockcrushers and 265 75 16 BF Goodrich KO2's
Rub a little in the front. Thinking about adding spacers or new springs.

Any suggestions on how much lift I can get using stock components and camber adjusters? Maybe use E350 springs etc? What Shocks? I used Bilstien on my 4x4 van and they were ok but not great. I want something that can handle the weight transfer when a strong crosswind hits while you are traveling at 65 mph.

Re: 94 Coachmen Class B

I think about 2 1/2" of lift in the front will max out any aftermarket camber adjuster. I had a 2" spacer for a while and was able to get alignment in spec... but only just. One of the problems with trying to use the factory alignment cams with any sort of lift is that you will have to give up caster to get your camber in spec: twitchy steering. That being said, I would plan on changing out your cams to the double eccentric style no matter what method of lifting you choose. I know that with my Camburg bent beams they still ended up grinding the knuckles to make more room between the knuckle and I-beam for more camber adjustment and less bending of my I-beams.

How much money are you willing to spend on shocks? Your best bet would be a set of custom valved rebuildable shocks. These vans are heavy and need a lot more damping than most off-the-shelf shocks can provide. With a typical "race" shock, you can make it ride as soft or as stiff as you want with a relatively simple (if you know what you are doing) shim change. I've never dealt with him, but I know that Ramsey is well versed in re-valving shocks for this application and you would save money (and headaches!) by buying from someone who can get it right the first time. I see that SMB is also selling Fox's now, I wonder how their valving compares?

Re: 94 Coachmen Class B

TheLetterJ, thanks for the info. I'll make a note to be on the lookout for double eccentric cams and no more than 2 1/2 lift. On the Shock's I'd like to stick around 100 per shock if possible. i guess if they are rebuild-able that would be worth paying more for.

Here is what I collected today.
My springs are F2UZ-5310M or the part number 9C2Z-5310-M which
is the same as

Brand:MOOG
Part Number(s):CC878
ProductName:Variable Rate Coil Springs, Front
Inside Diameter:3.983
End Type 1:Pigtail
End Type 2:Pigtail
Bar Diameter:0.781
Install Height:13.00
Load in Pounds:1687.0
Spring Rate:589.0
Free Height:15.75

I found this on moog's site
CC876 3.983 0.781 589 1510 13
15.56 PT PT
CC878 3.983 0.781 589 1687 13
15.75 PT PT
CC880 3.983 0.781 589 1850 13
16 PT PT

would I get any lift with CC880's they appear to be the same install height? or would using spacers be better?

or would this be a better idea

Re: 94 Coachmen Class B

While the 880's are only 1/4" taller free length (no load) they also have a higher spring rate (stiffer) which means that they will not be compressed as far (compared to your current springs) once the weight of your van is on them. I'm sure the info is somewhere on this forum, but I'd wager that you'd gain ~1 1/2" ride height with the spring swap. I think adding a coil spring isolator above and/or below the springs could get you another 1/2-1" without having to mess with the coil spacers and you would get the ride height you're after AND some added spring rate that I'm certain your van would benefit from.

Re: 94 Coachmen Class B

Not to mention the springs on it are 21 years old. Probably sagging pretty good by now also. Are there any other spring alternatives? or is this the best one?

Re: 94 Coachmen Class B

Well, from reading it looks like the CC880S springs come in Agile's RIP kit or used to so I figured I'd give them a try. Ordered from amazon for 94 bucks. Now for some shocks. Im thinking of Bilsteins since Agile's Fox shocks are not available. Anyone run any of these?

33-187563 front

33-186863 rear

Oh yeah, new eyes

Keep us posted on how those springs work out. I was thinking of doing the same myself.

Re: 94 Coachmen Class B

Thanks Scotty,

Well, finally got around to installing the springs.

and comfort rv bilstein shocks

Definitely needs an alignment - I have some double adjustable cams that will be installed

Measured up front and got barely and inch of lift and I found out that I'm lopsided leaning to the passenger side about an inch both front and rear. Maybe my grey water tank is full or broken rear spring? I have to figure this out.
