Otter,
We're water folks too; lately it's been Stand Up touring around San Diego's Southern End of the Bay. There's elusive sea turtles that lurk around and we're always out early in the dawn hours catching the morning glass and snooping around for good sightings. We love body surfing together, and I still surf, but have slowed it down to spend more time on the rocks.
Last June in the Southern Sierras, Dome Rock, Anti Jello Crack, 5.10 finger crack:

I don't know much about roof racks in general but everything Chris @ ujoint does is top notch.

Rob,
That material looks like the 80/20 aluminum product. Looks like it could be modular as far as those slots in the rails go.

Yes, 80/20 indeed. As for more in depth information... I don't have. But contacting Chris would the best source of info.
AFAIK he can design and build most rack ideas...

You might try these guys as well...maybe send them a photo of the rack you want and see what it'd cost...

I've got about $400 in materials into this. Self built in my driveway, no welding. Harbor freight aluminum ATV ramps and some 4" aluminum flat bar. Total length 140" x 56", weighs 85 lbs
