Re: Dawn Patrol Build

Am I going to need some kind of ventilation on the sides for the fridge? I'm trying to avoid having to cut a vent in the body. Are there DOT regulations for this stuff? Where can I find those?

Also anyone install espar heaters? Any advice? things you learned, things not to do... etc.

Finally decided to go with a plastic tank. I got the rest of my door seals on, more parts ordered, thinsulate came in, and my boxes from Antigua come tomorrow. WOOHOO I get my tools back!! Oh and my clothes!

Anyway, check out my latest blog post about just how I able to do my journey and a few reasons why I'm doing it.

Re: Dawn Patrol Build

I just stopped the back wall of the fridge cabinet at the level of the condenser and compressor....so roughly the top 1/3 of the rear cabinet wall is open so that it can vent to the inside of the van.

Re: Dawn Patrol Build

Since I had a pile of chassis fans laying around from old work projects, I also used a 24V fan (running at 12V) to further ventilate that space. A 24V fan running at 12V spins slowly and makes very little noise. It's wired in parallel with the condenser fan and comes on when the fridge is running and blows in the up direction.

I also replaced the stock fan on the truckfridge with a much quieter unit since I am a very light sleeper.

I checked out your blog; you should consider spending a bit of time in Moab if you haven't been there. Arches NP is awesome, drive 10 minutes down the 191 and you are in Moab. Lots of cheap camping, plenty of free camping on BLM land for up to two weeks. An excellent place for 4X4, rock climbing, MTB, dirt bikes, river rafting, etc. You can rent dirt bikes, Razrs, jeeps, whatever you want.

Spring and fall are the best times as far as weather goes but that also means lots of people.

I've camped a fair bit in Moab and the surrounding areas so if you need suggestions just let me know. There is great primitive camping along the Colorado River on 128 and if it's hot you can camp at higher elevations outside of town.

I think if you know what 4x4 means, you know Moab. Fk yeah it's on the list! lol I'm going to be doing that in early spring as I wanna get out of the desert area before the heat.

Re: Dawn Patrol Build

I took everything out and painted it. I managed to get the floors back in.

I put 2x3's underneath the little pinch weld around the body and put in a screw long enough to reach the OSB. Everything is nice and snug.

Made a support since I had to cut the cross member for the vent.

Bent and prepped the aluminum for the roof rack.
