Re: Fuel tank for a 2005 E350

I'm in the process of doing having mine done. The stock one needs to be taken to a radiator shop to be cleaned and dipped. After that it can be cut down and re-welded up.
I've seen several done now.

Re: Fuel tank for a 2005 E350

I did mine. I took out the fuel pump (big hole). Let'er dry in the sun for a couple of days. Just before I fired up the cut-off wheel I blew her out well with a compressor blowgun. I ground off the coating about an inch from the edge with a wire wheel. I welded a 0.050 plate on the tank. You will never weld up the leak where the 2 tank halves are joined. I went and got some "Kream" gas tank sealer and coated the plate and about 3 inches up on the tank (on the inside of coarse). Ben great for a year now.

When I'm absolutely sure my tanks are empty and free of fumes, I stand back and toss lit matches into them. Of course hanging a match on a long pole works if you don't want matches in your tank when you're done, but it's less fun and the principle is the same: better to have it explode 10 feet away then when you're leaned over it with a tool.

Re: Fuel tank for a 2005 E350

When you HAVE to weld on a tank, we've always really cleaned them out and then filled them with water to just below where we have to weld. That at least greatly reduces the area that might have fumes. Much smaller explosion that way....

Re: Fuel tank for a 2005 E350

I have to agree with Scatter. Fuel soaks into the pores of the metal and the heat of welding or cutting can vaporize enough to explode. Even tanks that have been sitting for years can still explode.

If you can't fill it with water, get a tank of inert gas and keep it flowing into the tank while you apply heat. Nitrogen or argon is good.

Put some dry-ice into a clean tank, this will displace the co2.

Sorry to resurrect this older post, but I'm dropping my tank to repair the vent hose and figured I might as well shorten the tank to make room for the np205 on my NV4500.

Is the above in red a typical issue after the modification?

And do most people cut off the tank right in front of the tank strap? I wish I had the 4x4 NV4500 to be sure how much room I really need..

Thanks.

Re: Fuel tank for a 2005 E350

Hi, put in a Titan Fuel tank where the spare tire goes, it's about 42 gallons and pumps into the main tank with a switch on the dash and has separate filler.
Then you will need a spare tire carrier, but will have over 70 gallons of fuel!

Call Jake at Aerotanks in San Bernadino and get one of his 45 +/- gal diesel tanks.

Hi "Sheriffdoug" This is similar to what i was thinking.,One might use a tank from a Ford E Series Cutaway. and use it NOT as a auxiliary tank but use it to replace the side mounted tank.they are 40 gallon tanks and mount in the rear where the spare tire is located. Seems like it MAY bolt in with minor modifications . .
