Homebuild under van propane tank?
Someone here has done it, I've seen it. Who are you?
I'm about to weld up something to hold a BBQ grill 20 gal tank under the van. Mine's a EB Ford do there's a good spot for it in the middle right behind the rear axle.
Sorry, search function isn't helping.
Thx

Re: Homebuild under an propane tank?
Probably obvious: Don't weld to the tank unless you're capable of pressure testing it and re-certifying it. Otherwise random places have every right to refuse to fill it.

Homebuild under an propane tank?
My plan is to weld up a cage for a BBQ tank under there. I'm not planning on welding the tank in permanently. There is a guy on the forums who has done this, i'm just gathering ideas.

Re: Homebuild under an propane tank?
You have enough space for a 20 lb tank that is vertical? Those things won't work on their side.

Re: Homebuild under an propane tank?
Get a fork lift tank. Most have a nice gauge on them too.

Re: Homebuild under an propane tank?
Good idea Dave! Will that work? I mean, can I easily find the fittings, etc. to mate it to a Suburban furnace?
CarringB, I guess I knew that but had forgotten. Anyway, If I can find the thread it had pics and everything of how he mounted a 20lb. underneath in the back. A forklift tank may be a better idea anyway.

Re: Homebuild under an propane tank?
You'll have to look into it. Most forklifts run on liquid fuel but I have one that has the valve on top of the tank. It has a flat bracket on the base that I drilled holes into and put castors on it so I can push it around. Use it for a set of propane heaters. If you can find one of those it would work out fine for you. If I find one similar I'll post back.

Re: Homebuild under an propane tank?
looks like this but larger around:
The gauge is on the end of the tank

Re: Homebuild under an propane tank?
Check this out:
Double the capacity, but its composite so its lightweight, and you can see the liquid inside.

Downside of a forklift tank is you will need a vaporizing regulator (aka vaporizer), which look kind pricey.
Some 5th wheels and truck campers come equipped with horizontal RV tanks, which will draw vapor instead of liquid.

Re: Homebuild under an propane tank?
I think the DOT approved tanks are more rugged to help survive a crash. They also have a special check valve that is supposed to shut off flow if the piping or valve is broken off. If safety is a concern, it might be best to use the DOT approved tanks with the latest safety check valve. Don't know if the fork lift tanks are DOT approved.
