Homemade Spare Tire Carrier for the rear

Anyone have any stories (with pictures of course) of a home brew rear tire carrier.

I have a homemade rear bumper that came with my van- wondering if anyone has avoided the $$$ of aluminess for this before and wants to share their info.

Also if anyone knows someone to do such a project near Glenwood Springs Colorado- as i have no welding experience nor equipment

Re: Homemade Spare Tire Carrier for the rear

I picked up a spare tire carrier at the junk yard. It mounts on the van door, which isn't optimal.. but it gets the job done. Cost me $10. I probably invested another $5 or so giving it a fresh coat of paint.

You can kinda see that it hooks on to the door hinges. On the other side, it bolts to the van. I've seen these bolts ripped out in the junk yard so I reinforced mine a bit:

Re: Homemade Spare Tire Carrier for the rear

here are a couple of links for company's that make a hinge kit's for tire carriers.

Once you get that thing welded to your bumper, get some 2"x2"x 1/8" square tubing from a steel supplier and make yourself something that looks like this.

you can get a local welder to weld it up for you. Still gonna cost you a couple hundred bucks at least, all said and done I'd think.

Thats what my plan was anyway. good luck and post somthing when you get it built.

This is one of the strongest hinges you can buy for a swing out carrier, rated at 10K lbs, and under $50 its the best deal and the strongest option: http://www.ironpigoffroad.com//index.ph ... ucts_id=74

If you want to build your own...Are you any good with(and do you have?)...time, a tape measure, a hack saw, metal drill bits & drill, a source for raw angle iron(boxed is overkill)...a grinder would be nice, but a file&brush would suffice... Nuts & bolts.

No welder required

Shouldn't there be a disclosure statement on that endorsement?
