L-track/Airline track for mounting seats?

I'm considering adding middle seats to my RB50 layout home build and wanted to know if anyone has used L-track to mount seats in a van and how that has worked?

Thanks!

I haven't....but it's unlikely seats fastened to L-track would pass any kind of crash testing....the factory stuff is bolted down rather considerably....just something to think about.....

I will be using L track for my seats also. It’s used to hold airline seats, wheel chairs and bench seats in short busses. Expo Vans sells some cool feet to easily install and remove the seats.

I think the key is how well you secure the L-track to the van. Just screwing into the floor is a death trap. It will require some underfloor reinforcement. Think MG has some cool full floor kits to help mount them.

Like Nrobert10 says, MGMetalworks made a steel plate for his floor and mounted L Track to it. He anchored the plate to the existing seat holes and added some others to keep it down. He didn’t post much more about it than that though. Here are the posts he made about them. Unfortunately the photos no longer work.

He is selling Unwin Seat Lockers on his website. Kind of like the Qstraints JFlo posted.

MG is super smart. I’ve been meaning to contact him about this. I’m hoping I can buy the steel plate and some seat anchors from him.

Not sure how most of this info works for you If you’re already built out Zuren.

I’m still collecting parts but I’m very interested in using this approach as well.
I’m thinking of a modified RB50 layout with removable chairs mounted to L Track on the passenger side rather than the bench bed.
I’d also like to bolt my driver’s side cabinets to the floor with L Track.
Like BoyWonder says, safety is a big concern.
I’m hoping that the steel plate bolted to the floor through the existing seat mount locations gives a sturdy platform to secure the L Track and then the cabinets and seats.
Ideally I’d like use the original Ford captain’s chairs I have and still be able to use the seat belts mounted on the wall.

This is very, very important to consider----the thin sheet metal flooring of any van is not suitable to secure a seat in the event of a collision.

I have a Snap On double-bay "small" tool box secured to my floor just behind the front seats. I purposely located it where it could be "clamped" to the floor with 1 1/2" x 3/16" aluminum L angle spanning two body cross members for what I believe is a high degree of security relating to being held in place during normal driving and in an impact too.

Almost any L-Track or similar cargo securing systems are DOT-approved but how they're attached to something is vitally important.

I have both Mac's Tiedown L-Track and Unwin track in my rig. I can tell you that the Unwin track is much more substantial than the standard track. I would never consider attaching my seats using standard track after having seen and held the Unwin product.

The Unwin seat lockers with our newly updated design Sienna mounts (and Scheel-Mann mounts) are really awesome for L-track builds. The seats go in and out with a flip of a latch and you can tip the seat back and roll them around on the integrated wheels. Makes reconfiguration a breeze.

We're already a dealer for the Unwin parts and trying to also get set up with Q'straint which makes the high strength L-track extrusions.

This looks like a great solution. If we have the pre-Unwin Sienna mounts, can they be reasonably adapted to the Unwin lockers? If not, would the new Sienna mounts be an easy swap for the originals? Can you provide details on pricing and ordering? Lastly, for now, what's approximate timing for Q'straint because I would be interested in buying as a set. Thanks!!!!

The older style mounts can be drilled to fit the Unwin lockers for certain L-track spacing. Narrower than 12" between the L-track and there's not much to drill into. The new style mounts fit to the seats in exactly the same way so they're a direct replacement. We should be hearing back from Q'straint very soon. We sent in all of the dealer paperwork, just waiting for the account to get set up.

contact us through the website expovans.com/contact and we'll send you the details about pricing and ordering.
