I pulled the trigger.
Ordered the Thermodynamics Cutmaster 42 with the SL60 torch (20’).

I’ll re-post after I spark it up a few times on the chance anyone might be interested.

Thanks for all the help.

You have any experience with plasma cutters?
That’s my current main objective with the welder close behind.

Thanks!
I don't do enough metal work to really need a plasma cutter, so I know very little about them. I do know enough that if I started looking at them, I'd probably end up with one, they are very cool.

Yep, I started looking ... now I gotta finda bunch of metal to cut up to justify this thing!

I would agree that needing to weld more than 1/4" material on the van is rare. You can build some really strong boxed stuff out of 1/4". Some of the "200ish Amp" inverter welders will go up to 3/8" which is thicker than anything my 10,000 lbs hitch is made of.

The scrap metal yard that I get my materials from is kind of huge, and ever piece looks smaller there than it really is. Every time I find myself struggling to move some stock, I have to remind myself that it's a van and not a tank, and that I should look for something smaller.

While I generally use TIG on all the little stuff, because making room to make a mess takes me time, and nicer welds are well, nicer. It's also nice to have a MIG gun to blast through a bunch of welds on projects that require that.

I've been eyeing plasma cutters lately. In reality, I want a mill, but a plasma cutter doesn't weigh as much as a mill....

Aww damn, that's a really nice setup, and you got it where, local welding supply?

I tried to buy it from a local brick and mortar. I like supporting those guys. Nobody had one in stock and the only guy that was listed as an ESAB dealer didn’t really perk up at the chance to order one. I did not press him on it.

Here’s a link to the website that I got this one.
Their customer service guy was very patient and knew his stuff inside and out.
There are a couple other good sites out there this one just had the best deal on this particular unit.

We do a lot of aluminum TIG welding with a Vulcan TIG welder from Harbor Freight. It is basic, but it has the settings needed. We weld .08", .19" and .25". It can run on 120V or 220V. We use 220V. We run it at least 5 hours a day, 5 days a week. We will eventually step up to something water cooled with better shielding gas control.
