I have the one piece, which raises with the penthouse top. I also use that spongy NASA foam pad with its bed sheet cover that is cut to fit the one piece penthouse bed.
I think the one piece is overall longer.
Don't know if the two pieces raises with the penthouse but I like the option of it going up together also.
I'm also amazed me how it's holding up weight but I'm keeping my eye on it all the time just in case. With me and my kids + the foam bedding, other bedding, the weight must be up to 300lbs on the one piece. So far so good.
