Re: Swiss van for the time in the US: Version 1

To join the M&G and then travel for one month, discovering the west, I built in 2 days a wooden layout. Not the best layout, for me, but was convienient and survived the trip.

I installed a bed, fridge, water system with sink, shower and toilet and some lights.

The navigation area: factory Radio/GPS, an additionnal GPS with the topo maps and a tablet PC for detailed maps or pictures. Didn't get to use the tablet as the topo were enough to get around.

As soon I got back, I took everything out and noticed it was starting to get lose and move...
Next step starting version 2...

Re: Swiss van for the time in the US: Version 1

Andrew,

How difficult was it to lower your fuel tank? Anything you learned that would be helpful to know before I do it? What type of jack configuration did you use?

My vents have leaked (when the tank is full and I'm parked at an angle, like my driveway) since the day I bought the van (used). TF has told me what I need to do to fix it, but it requires dropping the tank. Problem is the valves aren't seating tightly to the tank which I have confirmed. Requires bending the tabs on the tank a little so the vents "snug down" better.

Thanks,
Phil

Phil,

No big deal just need the proper tools to help or 4 hands, don't forget to unplug the fuel gauge wire
I used a workshop hydraulic jack with the small wheels.
Did use a wood board to protect the tank, with a low fuel level unscrew the 4 supports bolts and lower the tank keeping it balanced. Supports on the floor when it is down.

Mine is a diesel so I could connect the front and rear vents to the central vent. I did that to prevent dust or water entering the tank and being able to fill it full I think it helped.
If you do so dont forget to remove the spring and plug inside the vent.

Have fun,

Andrew

Re: Swiss van for the time in the US: Version 1

Thanks Andrew. Doesn't sound that bad.

Have you noticed a difference in filling your tank with the re-configured vents? One mild concern I have is that those vents are also to prevent fuel from draining out in the event of a roll over (boy, that would suck to do). I guess in your configuration, fuel would dribble out the fill neck if the van ended up upside down. I also wonder in your configuration, can air get into the tank OK as the fuel level drops? With the fuel cap on the fill neck, can air get into the tank?

Thanks again.

Phil

A little change but to improve it one needs to enlarge the filling opening I think.

There should be no fuel spill as the fuel cap has the same spring valve as the vents.
Which also allows air to get in.
