Reverse Flange High Top Removal

I'm trying to take off my existing 18" top and prep the van for a 24" top install. I have removed all of the interior trim to I can access the screws holding it down, however the adhesive is the next hurdle.

Reading through past threads I've seen folks use a windshield removal wire to cut through it - but doesn't that damage either the top or the metal beneath it?

I'm not sure how many people have gone down this path but I'm hoping at least a couple have and can chime in.
