Interesting.....looks like the rotors changed diameter for the F-250 in 2012.......just cruised around rock auto's website looking at rotor specs.....

This thread is awesome!

So much great info on this whole forum and I LOVE THIS THREAD!!

I don't follow all the spec talk but I have learned a TON about overall issues and sourcing for taking a rig from start to finish

Annie O - Thanks! Sometimes I feel like the guy in the corner babbling to myself but it's good to hear that it's helping someone. If you have any questions feel free to ask!

Too bad you had to resort to 'throwing the baby out with the bathwater', but it's not like you didn't give it the ole college try.

I understand that the 2005 and up Dana 60 has the larger ball joints (than the earlier Dana 60) which is a good thing, as by all accounts, the 2001-2004 ball joints don't last very long.

I was going to offer up ideas for improvements, but I guess the point is moot.

Brakes: I've found there to be a big correlation between stopping power and brake pad material, in undersized brake systems. I added a set of super aggressive metallic pads to a car with notoriously undersized brakes, and had surprisingly good results. I used to think pad material only effected service life, but not the case. In that instance, I bought new rotors and cheap pads, and it was just ok. On another guy's advice, I bought the most expensive metallic pads I could find, and the thing went from vague 'throw out the anchor and pray' brakes, to 'stops on a dime and gives a nickle change' brakes. It eats rotors at about the same rate the pads wear, but who cares (rotors are cheap) if the vehicle now makes semi-panic stops a little less nerve racking, and inherently safer.

Leaf shackles: where are the front axle leaf spring shackles located on the Advanced conversion? If the front (behind the bumper) that might also be contributing to the braking issues.

Steering: If the shackles are kinda long, as to lift the van without higher arched springs, that will put compliance in the steering. It's like mounting your leafsprings on 6" tall platform shoes. Some offroaders fix that with a track bar, but an impossibly short trackbar (because of no room) is a recipe for lots of bumpsteer, a bound up suspension, faster wearing trackbar bushings. The trackbar needs to be the same length (most important) and hanging at about the same angle (important) as the drag link.

TomsBeast - Thanks for the info!

It is unfortunate but fortunately I am getting what I wanted in the first place by putting this new to me axle in. Most of the points you brought up basically spelled out why my front end was having issues.

I'll be sure to take some better pictures of the tear down just for future reference as to why others may be having problems and maybe once posted you can confirm.

Thanks for the info on the brakes, that's definitely good stuff to know.

Brakes! I know this picture doesn't do them justice but if you have anything other than a 2012+ F250 axle these things are huge!

I also went ahead and stripped down the axle to the point where the only stuff on it is the stuff I will be using...

And here is the slowly growing collection of the rest of the stuff I need to make this axle work...

Nice parts! Are you still going ahead with Mgmetalworks new conversion or building your own? Looking forward to the progress!

Yes sir, I'm gonna be his Guinea pig so hopefully all goes as planned. With MG in the drivers seat I don't see how it could be anything short of amazing.

I also had the chance to ride in his van before the tear down and feel his suspension and I was impressed. It reminded me of my 2012 F250 which is exactly what I wanted.

I definitely don't have the skills to make something up on my own ( I wish I did ).
