Also, it's a 1999 not 2000.

If he has a signed title, it sounds like he acquired it but didn't process it through the DMV to get it into his name. If this is the case, the risk is that you're giving cash to someone who isn't the registered owner.

Re: 2000 SMB EB50 4x4 80k miles
Hi All -
I am a new member to the forum but have been lurking for quite some time. What a wealth of knowledge here! I have been working hard and saving for a SMB and I just saw this ad!
I am just looking for a starter rig and plan on cruising the US. I have access to free mechanical labor and was just wondering what you guys thought it would take to get this rig ready to rock?
How much for a propane system and any other immediate mods/repairs that you see? Thank you in advance for any help, I really appreciate it.

Seems like propane would be a tough retrofit. The tank is big, and with everything built out I'd say look at espar units for heat and hot water instead of propane. Or you can live without it... or so I've heard...

Re: 2000 SMB EB50 4x4 80k miles
Like RPA said, a cash only deal when the seller doesn't even have the title in his name raises a lot of red flags for me. In addition, I don't believe any bank would finance it and hand over cash. If the deal is really on the up and up, at a minimum, I'd require a trip to the DMV in person with a clear title transfer to my name prior to handing over any cash. I recently sold a car to a guy for cash, and I couldn't find the title either. It turned out that there was a lien on the car from 1982 that was still on the record despite being paid off over 30 years ago. We got that cleared up, but it took over a month. If I hadn't given the guy such a smoking deal he probably would have been pretty upset. Still, sometimes you can get a great deal if your willing to do extra paper work, but a cash deal requires you to be extra careful...................

If he's a flipper he likely wants cash to minimize the number of sales / title transfers associates with his name. In CA I believe more than five sales a year makes you a dealer, in need of a dealer license etc. and then there are sales and income taxes too ...... All semi-slippery reasons for structuring the sale this way, but reasons posing little risk to the buyer. I would contact the current title holder, confirm that they sold it to this guy (and ask about any mechanical issues), and if that checks out I wouldn't be worried.

Noticed it has a leaf sprung front end. Wasn't sportsmobile using quigley for 4x4 in 2000?

I'd guess this is Advanced.. But just a guess. It's not SMB 4x4.

The seller's story is that a friend owed him money so gave him the van..

Good - then he should have no objection to a call or even a visit the owner named on the title, his "friend," to confirm the sale and vehicle history
