So true...especially the older ones. I have a couple Sportsmobiles, 2003 and 2006 with the 7.3 and Duramax engines and as a cabinet builder could build one much better but brand recognition probably helps resale values over a "home build". I think I'll end up rebuilding the interior of my RB-50 because it's the 7.3 with the SMB 4x4 and 55K miles...worth it to me.
Prices over 5 years ago for used or even new were much less. I got a quote from Fieldvan recently on an RB-50 build out that I was considering on a low mile 7.3 4x4 and it was around $85K
People don't think twice about spending $150-200K for a Sprinter camper van probably because many finance them if they're newer. I'm partial to body on frame setups for 4x4 off roading. I have a 4x4 Chinook with the 7.3 and love the extra space. I must admit the classics look really cool.
