Re: 4x4 Chinook

I like a side entry too, and so gave the Born Free a hard look. They are very nicely appointed, but I was put off by the fact that the fiberglass shell is not exactly a shell, but more of a collection of molded fiberglass "siding pieces" hung over a framework (and with various seams here and there). For that I prefer the Chinook with its one piece shell. I mean, if you're going to use fiberglass, might as well do what it can do best, was my thought.

Always hard to find the perfect rig!

I like the Tiger Provan layout (side entry on a pickup truck chassis), but whew, whole 'nother price range. I haven't really looked into how they are put together since I likely won't spend that much on a rig.

Re: 4x4 Chinook

There are side entry Chinooks but they're very rare.

Re: 4x4 Chinook

Oh that's right - I should have mentioned those. I think they only made them a couple of years (late 90's). When I first got wind of them, I was all, "Oh perfect, Chinook build plus side door!" But as it turned out, I didn't like what they did with the interior at all (for me). It was essentially all designed around the desire for a permanent double bed in one rear corner. In exchange for that, you gave up a couch, an interior water tank (it was mounted under the coach instead), some propane capacity, galley size, etc. Also the bathroom door faced the main living area instead of a hallway. There was basically only a small dinette for daytime space ('course you could lounge on the bed too).

I would have really liked it if it had the usual layout, but just the forward club chair was given up (but could swivel passenger seat instead), and then the bathroom at the rear could be bigger (where the door is now), with perhaps some additional rear storage (inside or out). The way they did it just felt so inefficient to me (and I don't really care about a permanent double bed anyway in such a small rig). Probably someone's cup of tea though

Re: 4x4 Chinook

Maybe bolt a Scamp or Escape molded fiberglass fifth wheel to a chassis cab? Cummins of course. I'm sure it's been done. I've seen the Bigfoot truck camper on a chassis cab as an expo rig, neat idea.

Somehow I knew you'd have a picture of something close!
