Seriously? Ok... I might do this...

If any other forum member intends on bidding on this van for the purpose of using it as it is, let me know and I won't run the bid up on you... otherwise... I might have to do this.

Re: 85 SMB On eBay

You know, and I just picked up a weatherguard gutter mount roof rack on Craig's List for $100.

$2100 is a lot of cash... but I sure bet I'd enjoy being able to stand up in the van.

Anyone know what the weight limit is on the top of these pop tops?

No joke! One thing KEEPS killing me... Why isn't more of the camper interiors being done with injected plastic moldings?

I have several sets of shelves in my garage. Some are wood and metal, some are plastic. The plastic shelves won't hold has much, but they come very very close. Meanwhile, they weight a tiny fraction of what the other shelves weigh. Their strength comes from smart designs with proper reinforcement.

How many rb50 campers does SMB turn around in one year? What about regular campers and RVs?

I bet you could shave many lbs off of a Sportsmobile with plastic molded interior AND come up with some amazing looking ergonomic designs.

If you did, I'd have an interest in the couches and maybe a cabinet or two. Did I see a furnace in there, too? I've got an '88 for sale, but the more I look the more I think I'll never be able to replace it without a huge increase in investment. So why not start the build, huh?

If I get it, I'll be using one of the two couches. I think I want to build my own cabinets though.

Re: 85 SMB On eBay

I've thought about this at length. I don't think I'm going to go through with it.

Since I was having trouble finding a pop up solution, I started designing a two story concept. Basically, I planned to put a roof rack on top of the van with a rooftop tent.

The thing is, I've already purchased the roof rack (needs work) and a rooftop tent (still in the box).

The popup limits my upstairs storage, I hear reports of troubles dealing with leaks, and that they're more difficult to insulate (I wanna use my rig for snowboard trips).

Beyond the $2100 for this van, I have to transport it back to Colorado and register it here. I also have to pass emissions to register it which could be easy or could require spending money. I had to invest $400 in exhaust work to get my current rig legal (it had no cats). There's also the chance that the poptop itself will need some work which could cost even more money and time.

If someone else is thinking about grabbing this rig for the same reason, I'd love to buy one of the two beds off of you...

The auction has a few days left... maybe I'll flip out at the last minute and do it... I'd sure like to stand up... but right now, I'm leaning towards staying the path. I'm already over budget on a lot of other issues and all...

Besides, I can always go for the poptop later (assuming I can find a situation like this again). However, once the poptop is up, I can't really revert back to the original idea...

*sigh* I hate my indecisive nature!

Re: 85 SMB On eBay

If nobody bids maybe contact the guy and offer him $1500 or something. If somebody bids, you've got the rooftop tent.

I was wondering if you could do something with one of these:

I've seen them from cheap to free, a compact pickup version should be about as wide as you need, and they come with appliances to salvage much like the van. The top would be harder to fit, but it could be an alternate starting point for someone.
