GTRV 4.6l

Hi all,

You will probably think that this guy never stop:-). But I found an interesting GTRV for sale with 122miles. Please find below some pictures.

My only point (for now) is the engine is 4.6l. I want to get your view on this engine. Is it too small?

Are you towing? Filling it with people? Going over 10,000 ft mtn passes?


It isn't that heavy of a van so a 4.6L is fine. Plenty of small RV have small engines. The Promaster, Sprinter, Tiger Provan, etc all have small engines.


You should find out how it is geared. That is more important than displacement in most cases.

I am not sure that I understand "how it is geared"

the van will be used for me and my family, so 2 kids and 2 adults. I am not planning to tow.

I have noted that a lot of thread was saying 5.4 V8 is good. So, by default, Am I asking if 4.6 is not that good:-).

"How it is geared" is referring to the rear end (rear axle) gear ratio. A smaller or less powerful engine can be regeared for better performance in certain situations.

I'd be willing to bet this is a standard e150 with a semi-float rear axle and 3:73 gearset, with the 4r75 tranny. I would think the van will do fine for camping duty with your family or four but it would be pretty weak for towing and it's not going to win any races.

According the the guy, the van fits less than 7 feet. So, it should work for my garage. I will try make quick tour this week and will keep you updated.

I picked up an E150 with the 4.6 for my gf. I expected the worst but was pleasantly surprised. Compared to my Astro, it's a rocket ship! 20+ mpg doesn't hurt either.

My dad is a contractor and had an E150 with the 4.6 V8 for many years. He never had any issues with it, and was always hauling around way too much weight in it :-)

You could remove the roof rack for more clearance. Looks like there is only a front rack. What about the rear?

I'd be concerned about weight and want to check that. What is the curb weight, front/rear axle weights, front GAWR, rear GAWR, and GVWR?
