I witnessed one shear off right at the weld where it went into the bumper, looked like it was due to heat stress of welding to me (not mine).
I have been running one on my early bronco with a ~130 pound spare tire for almost 10 years. I ran the spindle through a sleeve in the bumper and welded the bottom. It has seen a lot of rough offroad use.
