Sounds it might need a little engine work, but it is a 7.3...

I think I was the first one to respond to this guy and have actually had some correspondence. I plan to purchase this one if the seller agrees.

Re: Portland Craigsfist, 1999 sporty

"...last time I drove it had no power and lots of white smoke..."

Could be the turbo, could be head gasket, could be a bad injector(s) or the o-rings on the injectors, could be a lot of (expensive) things without more info. Does the white smoke smell like regular exhaust, or fuel?

Re: Portland Craigsfist, 1999 sporty

I, uh, shouldn't a 1999 in tip top shape be $20,000 ish?

I mean the 7.3s are great, but I'd at least budget for putting a junkyard engine in. Plus replaced tranny says "driven hard"... yeah, I'd be making an offer if it was me.

Re: Portland Craigsfist, 1999 sporty

There are a lot of "What ifs" with this rig that is certain. The owner is out of town so we'll know more when be gets back. Even if you had to do a total rebuild 20k sounds like a very fair price imo.. A 99 with 7.3 in good shape would bring 30k at least right?

Re: Portland Craigsfist, 1999 sporty

I only see one pic in that ad and it's just the rear ext.

He probably knows what the issue is but he's hoping a buyer will roll the dice.

What other reconditioning does it need?

Hard to tell with a half ass desc and one photo.

However, I've found many great deals when the ads were poorly formed. Makes most potential buyers hesitant. That's when the persistent buyer can capitalize.

Either way my initial gut feeling is that this van is a project van.

Agree. Might be a worthwile project, but I wouldn't drive it far, if at all, to get it where it can be properly assesed and repaired. There's a potential of doing irreversible damage to the engine.

I just spoke with the seller. Sounds like we've made a deal. He won't be back in Eugene for a 2 weeks. I'll report back if all goes well.
