My 1998 doesn't have it (never did) and it's fine. No discernible wear. I'll probably get some and put it on, but it would hardly be the first thing I look for when looking at a used SMB. Maybe in a 4x4 rig that does a lot of off-road twisting, but for a 2WD rig I don't think it's that big of a deal.

What Teflon tape do you use for this application, a PTFE coated fiberglass? I've already got wear marks and am searching for a product to cover it up, if a tape will work might give it a go. Although, I'm assuming it would show, some touch up paint in a rattle can would prob look better.

The tape that SMB uses is Avery UHA tape. It appears to be a very thick polypropylene or polyethylene. UHA stands for "ultra high Adhesion"...although one of my short pieces in the front of the roof between the channels is peeling up.

SMB sells it on their site $56/roll. One roll is more than enough to do an RB and will easily do an EB.

Re: V10 E350 RB50 layout in CO on CL

Mine didn't have the UHA tape and there was some rubbing of paint, nothing a little sanding and rustoleum wouldn't cure, with UHA purchased from SMB to go over it. Mine was really mostly bare metal, as the rubbing of the top kept rust from really developing.
