When checking for rust, make sure you pull up the padding in the cockpit. It's a prime area for rust. I purchased a van that I knew had some surface rust underneath and a little on the quarter panels, which didn't concern me. What I didn't know was the cockpit floor pan on the passenger side was 50% rotted out with some rot on the driver's side.

The padding that Ford used under the rubber floor gets soaked and traps moisture.

Thanks Bcam.

That's the kind of thing that concerns me about buying something long distance. The cost of getting there to look at it can add up if it ends up being a dissapointment. I always get a kick out of people saying it's just "surface rust". As if surface rust is the harmless variant of every other kind of rust. Lol...

Can you ask the seller for pics of the front axle setup? Pretty easy to verify by pics.

I always like traveling with a spare. But your side of the country isn’t near as sparse. If you have good roadside assistance (like AAA+) you’re probably ok.

carringb. It does have a spare just not a size matching one. I doubt AAA will bring one with and I'd hate to have to try to buy one out of desperation. I will try asking for more pics. If he can't make the effort than neither will I.

Is there anyone on here that lives in the Nasheville area that would be willing to look at this van on my behalf? Would be be more than happy to compensate for your time.

Actually same goes for Roswell NM area. There's a van out there that could be promising if everything he says about what he's done to the van is true. He claims that the entire driveline has been rebuilt including brand new 4:10 gears in both axles. It's the van in the pics a few posts up.
