2001 7.3 Transmission Help
Wondering if anyone can help with a good transmission shop in Denver.
Took Greta out for a camping weekend and had issues with her keeping speed below 45mph. She would downshift then you would hear this loud whooshing type sound, then mphs would drop. This would only happen going up hill. The last hill she would not downshift.
Thanks for any recommendations you may have.

The shop I used on Wadsworth seems to be gone. Anyway there are a dozen transmission specialists around Denver. I'd bring to AAMCO if one was close.
I'd consider a swap before a rebuild. Ford van transmissions are a dime a dozen and could be found at any junkyard. Rebuilds are very expensive

Simple,
Is there a way for the transmission shops to "bench" confirm the viability of a junkyard transmission before install? If not, wouldn't you be opening yourself up to another bad transmission? Curious because I never really thought of a used tranny from a junkyard as an option.

Dont feel great about getting a transmission from junkyard to install in the van. Never like spending extra $, but a warranty and some piece of mind is a plus. Especially here out west where you can be a long ways from anywhere.

All depends on how much you understand about those magic slushboxes. No shop is going to that project btw. That is a DIY mechanic project. Shops don't install used parts.

ATS has a built 4R100 transmission, available at several diesel sites, don’t have any knowledge about how good it is. I had John Wood build me one, it lasted a year before it toasted itself and he rebuilt it, was probably his last.

Is the "whooshing" maybe just the cooling fab? Things could just be running really hot, which could cause the PCM to reduce power.

Could you manually downshift?

Carrington, so interesting thought. Took van to a transmission shop they couldn't find any issues. Checked the engines for any codes, nothing. Looking for a diesel mechanic here in Denver so they can check it out. Have a big trip planned in a week with Greta and I am a little worried about this whole thing.

My money is on a bad torque converter or fluid pump.
Explains no shift (low fluid pressure) and noise (bearings/ clutch) and reduction in speed (no transfer of power).
TC problems don‘t really show up while scanning (only perhaps on the clutch).
Can you somehow „feel“ if there‘s vibration somewhere with the dog house off?
Can you access some trans oil? How does it look like? Smell?
How many miles does the transmission have?
