2006 Ford 6.0 Diesel - Rattling sound in engine compartment?

Hey Guys,

I'm starting to hear an intermittent "rattling" sound within my engine compartment. Any ideas as to what it might be?

I took it to Fremont Ford and as usual they couldn't hear the noise and once I picked it up the noise came back I recorded a short video and you can hear the sound especially at the end of the clip when I took my foot off the pedal. Keep in mind I wasn't "flooring" it but just keeping it at around ~2K RPMs.

hard to tell from the clip. And difference in performance? Do you monitor with a scanguage or the like?

Could be a boost leak in the CAC tube to the turbo.

That reminds me of right before my mechanical vacuum pump went out. Brad

My serpentine belt idler sounded exactly like that about 20 miles before it seized and melted the belt on the freeway. The sound only occurred at certain throttle positions, so I was stumped until it sounded like your vid (before, it may a whistle almost like a turbo). I was actually able to see the run-out in the idler pulley at idle, so I knew it was going out before it seized. On I-5 of course. Luckily the V10 runs without the water pump.

I've also geard a nearly identical sound from an Audi A4 with a bad camshaft bearing.

Thanks for the replies. At this point I've spoken to the Ford Service manager and I've sent them the clip to see if they can make any sense from it. Stay tuned...

btw, I do have a scanguage and I do monitor EOT/ECT, FMP voltage, TFT and etc... After I changed the air filter and fuel filters, I did notice that the engine would rev higher and get a little more power but from there after I started to notice this mysterious rattling sound.

I am sure this is completely unrelated but:

Twice I've had rattles at certain RPM's in the van. Took it in and no one could figure it out. Pulled the dog house off and found change on top on the engine along with mail from the previous owner. Removed change and the rattle went away.....

Second one was the 4x4 shift lever vibrating at 3500 rpm but the sound seemed to come from under the doghouse. Fixing that one now....

Yeah, I wonder if my phone is down there? Last I saw of it was when it was sitting on the dog house. And I agree the the second video sounds just like the Atlas 4x4 shifters.
