2013 6.8l V10 Low Idle and Surging

So a little bit ago I had some surging in my V10. Kind of a low idle too at about 500rpm which is still going. Here and there the idle would jump up to 1300 in park and then if I throttled a bit it would seem like it wanted to stall. Noticed a little bit of surging around town too and kind of late throttle when I gas it a bit.

After some reading my best guess is to clean the MAF sensor and check the vacuum hoses around the throttle body. From what I gather there is no Idle Air Control Valve on these throttle by wire motors so that is out. Another guess is the TPS. So my course of action will be to clean the MAF with MAF cleaner, check for vacuum leaks at the throttle, then maybe swap the TPS if that doesn't do it.

I have noticed that since the 4x4 conversion I have kind of lost my "roll" or that the van decelerates pretty quickly with no throttle. I guess this is to be expected, but maybe it's related to the low idle condition which I think existed before the conversion. Haven't been putting too many miles on the rig as it's getting built out and the kids have no seat.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Vacuum leak or sticky throttle body are definitely both plausible, because vacuum still controls fuel pressure. Spraying carb cleaner on vacuum lines will expose a leak. It will surge when you hit the leak.

Even a little bit of oil vapor deposits can cause the throttle body to stick. It can be cleaned, but disconnect the battery because the motor is strong enough to take off a finger. Also, if you do see a film of oil vapor deposits, you might want to think about goin full synthetic...

I'd see those vapor deposits inside the throttle body??

And thank you as always carringb!

Yeah if you see a brown film that's the deposits. Of course, dirt can also make it stick if the filter wasn't fully seated. And oiled filters can do it too if over oiled

*edited for bad autocorrecting

I had those same issues on my V10, it was the MAF sensor... every three to four thousand miles I'd have to clean it despite having brand new air filters and a completely sealed box. I would get a CEL and sometimes a hidden one regarding the MAF.

I took it as part of the norm...

I hope it's just a dirty MAF, that would be a piece of cake. The low idle makes me think that could be it.

Didn't check for codes, which I should have.

Does it have a MAP sensor? My 5.8 Bronco had the same problem when that sensor went bad.

I had a lot of problems on a trip last summer with my V10. Surging, coughing, loss of power, eventually total shutdown. It was a bad seal around the MAF where my AFE intake had split due to a bend that was too tight. V10's mess up so rarely I'm guessing MAF too. Check all your intake connections.
