So it was the coils, changed the one bad coil and plug. Runs 100% better. Now have to do the rest of them.
Took a mountain bike trip down to Hood River, OR last weekend and was really impressed with it after just one coil.

Good info, and I'll try to keep it in mind if I have any issues with my 4.6L.

Glad you tracked it down, I had a similar problem and was going to mention those. There is an elbow in the line going to the PCV that is near your firewall, and it has insulation over it. They are hard to see and they crack in half. They dont throw the check engine light until they break all the way but when they crack you lose power and gas mileage. It is only about 30.00 part and make a big difference. Take a look at that if you haven't already. Enjoy the trip!

Will do Dirk thanks for the heads up. I was a little nervous about driving it that far and shuttliing people up a mountain. But the van did great except for a coolant leak in the rear heater line. Quick trip to ACE hardware and bypassing the rear lines we were back in business and riding bikes again.

Hmmm...now I'm second guessing a few occasional 'slips' that I'm experiencing, or think I'm experiencing, on my 4.6L. Is there an equivalent to hypochondria when it comes to vehicles?

You bet there is. It works two ways; mechanical issues and oh, that's a great idea. I do that to my rig too.

So has anyone done all the coils on their 5.4? I think I am going to tackle it this weekend, new coils and plugs should run pretty good after.
