5.4L Performance Parts

A while back there was someone asking about headers for the 5.4L vans and the response seemed to be along the lines of "Don't bother with the heads, the intake is plenty big as it was designed for the V10, just go with a catback"

Has anyone else gone with a free-er flowing exhaust? Part of my motivation is to move the low-ish hanging tail pipe to in front of the rear axle to a high-mount behind the nerf bar and the front of the leafsprings. As far as what the OEM torpedo is replaced with, basically all I'm looking for is higher flow, no drone, and stock-ish noise (I like my neighbors...).

I have also heard pretty good things about 5* tuning- can you pass CA smog with one?

How does the transmission hold up with the slight bump in power this might yield? The 5.4L's had factory ratings of 235-255 HP, I'd like to imagine an exhaust + ECU tune would land me somewhere in the 260-range and still retain some degree of reliability?

Anyone in the SFBay area know an exhaust shop that does good work?

Erik
