??? I'd say you live on the RIGHT coast! $4500 sounds pretty high to me, Dave, but a 5r110 failure is pretty weird too. Leave it to the guy who can crack the body on a Ford van to tweak one though.

If I were you, going where you go, I would just do it. There's a lot of peace of mine in who rebuilt it and how it is done. His reputation is impeccable.
For ANYONE else I would say go with a salvage yard low mileage unit because the 5r110 is supposedly almost bulletproof as is.

Let us know how it turns out.

Yeah it sucks when you try to take good care of the vehicle by keeping up on maintenance and what not and crap still happens. Next will probably be injectors or glow plugs. I need a vacation... oh wait, I'm broke

Got the money pit back. Shop said a clutch pack(?) (coast clutch cylinder) came apart . No damage to the transmission and he said it looked brand new. About 3 grand to go through it and beef it up. On to the next adventure.

Do you have any details on what they did to beef it up?

They put in an upgraded clutch pack, Trans-pack/shift kit and a billet torque converter. I already had a deep pan.
