5R110W Transmission rebuild
My transmission just gave out on me a week or so ago. Like it jumped into neutral. I sent the van via AAA to the Fresno shop who's bullet proofing several SMB's and who did my engine a couple years back. They said a seal blew out (no cause) and suggested I upgrade the transmission of course. I've already got a hi-cap pan that holds about 6 extra quarts.
Are there any pros or cons to adding a shift kit and a few other items to increase longevity?
How bout the torque converter?
The job was quoted 4500 to so call bullet proof it. They haven't given me a quote on the converter if it's needed yet. Seems kind of a steep price.
Thanks for any suggestions. They start on it soon.
Dave

FWIW - last time I checked pricing my local wrecking yard wanted $350 for a 5R110 because there's so little demand for them. I had somebody else offer me one for $200. I was considering a swap but there isn't really any established programming for an aftermarket TCM and the V10.

Shoot, sorry to hear that. Good luck with it. That said, you can buy a Ford reman for $3000. https://parts.autonationfordwhitebea...RpZXNlbA%3D%3D
Of course, there's freight going with that option but I don't think rebuilding the tranny is rocket science. I'd figure out exactly what upgrades they can do. Better clutch plates, valve body, etc. https://www.elitedieselengineering.c...0-Powerstroke/
Besides, what upgrades does the 5R110W actually require? It's a pretty robust transmission. For that kind of money I might look at the 5R Towmaster from John Wood. John Wood Automotive - Products

Thanks guys, I just feel better knowing who rebuilt the thing. A tow out of the backcountry might cost up to 4 grand to get out of some of the places I take the van in to. Not sure about a used transmission. I just found out to replace it with a brand new stock Ford transmission would cost more than 5 grand (parts & labor) and unlike many here on the site who could swap it out themselves with a rebuilt one, I'm not up for it. Just hope the trans pack/shift kit helps (worth it) along with all the new clutches and crap he's replacing in it.
Looks like I might just have to bite the bullet. It's on the lift at the shop and should be done next week. I was always told this transmission is a solid piece of equipment... no ???
Thanks.

I'm not sure you can get a brand new stock Ford transmission? My understanding is they are all remans.
So you made it through the summer unscathed and it crapped the bed close to home. Sounds like win win to me but I'm still stinging from my alternator debacle in small town Ootah.

All the same reasons I went with a John Wood transmission when mine went out in 2011. And I had a 200 mile tow available with AAA and I lived 195 miles from Johns shop in Holtville, CA. We are on the same page Dave. Just get it done the best way you feel comfortable with and drive on. It's the pilot strapped into the seat who's ass (or wallet for a recovery) is on the line.
I'm not sure what the trans pack/shift kit your shop is talking about but I do remember John keeping my van a day more to do some kind of modification/adjustment to the shift pattern. I don't know if it was via computer, valve body or what. He was the Yoda and I wasn't going to question it. I wish I knew what torque converter he used as I'm sure it wasn't a stock Ford one but nothing insanely fancy. John mentioned the TC had a slightly higher stall speed than the stock Ford one. And lastly John said only use Schaffers All Trans fluid. Again I didn't question, see above statement.
This summer I did a change of fluid and filters for the first time since then. Picture for positive insperation.
