Re: 6.0 diesel with no power, no codes, no smoke, no idea

Thanks for the advice. Having it towed to Colorado Ford in Bullhead City today. I will report the results when available.

I had very similar symptoms when our FICM went bad. Would just increase RPMs without delivering power to the engine. Could only go about 5 - 10 MPH at best.

Re: 6.0 diesel with no power, no codes, no smoke, no idea

Got the van back from Colorado Ford in Bullhead City. Nice people, very accommodating, seemed to know what they were doing. The FICM was bad and they found 2 bad injectors. They had no explanation for the failures, they said that the FICMs just go out sometimes. As for the injectors they checked the fuel pressure and it was OK. Perhaps the FICM took them out.

I'm glad that this didn't happen on the trail. It is disconcerting to have seemingly random inexplicable multiple failures like this. If you are going out solo like i do always tell someone where you are going and when to expect you back, carry lots of water and don't drive anywhere you aren't willing to hike out from.

Glad to hear you are back on the road. Out of curiosity how many miles on your van?

Am I the only one that carries a spare FICM? Never had a FICM fail, but I have heard the horror stories of failures with no warning. So I bought an updated one from FICMrepair.com and kept mine as a backup.

I think it is a great idea...assuming you know how to replace it. I really should learn how to do this as well.

The problem is, how do you diagnose the need to replace the FICM? I think you'd need a laptop with Auto Enginuity software. I don't think a ScanGauge will get you close enough to diagnose the condition.

I was just going to assume it was always the FICM . I've had multiple failures now, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I'm done with those. The scan gauge did bring up the correct code one of the times though, I could search through my prior posts if you are curious to the details.

Clifford has 91,000 miles on him. Most of the classic 6.0 problems happened around 70k to 80k miles with the previous owner: turbo, EGR cooler, etc.

I thought the ficm is flashed to the specific programming of your motor. If I purchased a second, is the unit flash based off the vin#? I would hate to carry an extra that ended up not working.

I recommend the bulletproof diesel power supply ... 6 phase 58 volt unit. I am in the process installing this.
