Re: 6.0 oil cooler terminal timeframe?

If you have the time and courage to tackle this then about the only downside is the lack of warranty on your labor.

Wrong. If something I do isn't right, I get to do it again, for free. Isn't that just like a warranty?

Sort of, unless something is also ruined and requires replacement. I'm personally in the middle of that right now myself on a non-van project.

I've always used AllData for the 6.0. Never had an issue, even though a lot of mechanics livingly call it "No-Data". They have some reasonable subscriptions for individuals. Their shop instructions are pretty well written, so you don't really need prior experience with a vehicle (which makes sense since most of their uses are independent shops who work on all makes).

Re: 6.0 oil cooler terminal timeframe?

I've been researching the oil cooler job and have bookmarked a bunch of links. The diesel forums are a great resource

As far as special tools, the job doesn't seem overly complicated just tedious with hard to reach components. But you might want this tool for the serepentine belt. http://www.harborfreight.com/serpentine ... 66344.html

Here's the best price on an oil cooler rebuild kit at $277.
http://parts.autonationfordwhitebearlak ... at1=158122

I found the entire replacement oil cooler on ebay fpr $220. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1840756C96-FORD ... 97?vxp=mtr

Just make sure you don't buy a Dorman.

Links with reference information and manuals. http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/70427 ... 0-p-s.html
http://www.outlawpsd.com/showthread.php ... -delete-it)

This is a great description of the job with pictures. http://www.powerstroke.org/forum/genera ... -tips.html

Most importantly, we're going to need an oil cooler thread with progress and updates.

There's nothing magical about that job. Just a lot of steps because those parts are really buried.
Any special tools I'll need besides a good torque wrench? I don't have a parts washer- is that a dealbreaker?
i'm gonna make a suggestion, if you haven't dived into this yet.

first, your temps are at failure point, and what was said about having the EGR cooler
fail and hydrolock the motor is painfully valid information. a hydrolock will usually
blow headgaskets. when mine blew, the total cost for repair exceeded $10,000.

second, go over here, and do some reading.

http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/forum107/

the information there is second to none you will find on the net.

there are a number of small details on tearing this engine down, that aren't small
if you don't know them. you need to do some reading first.

i'll be honest. getting to anything in the E series is a nightmare. knowing what
i know, and my first engine swap was a 327 FO chevy into an XKE at 13 years old,
if i had to tear my 6.0 apart, i'd go do what i do for a living, and let my diesel
mechanic do what he does for a living.

I'll probably follow your suggestion but the OP is already done. viewtopic.php?f=39&t=11830&start=45
