Re: 6.0 PSD won't start after long drives

Is there any way of looking to see if a rig has the one or two piece fitting or is it buried inside? Or is there a specific build date when the new one was installed?
This would be a MAJOR bummer in a remote area.

The "older" STC fitting was superseded sometime in early 2007. The old fitting is visible in the photo at : http://www.forddoctorsdts.com/articl...icle-06-10.php as the two pieces in the lower right of the first photo. This article is about the first fix that went into production in '06 attempting to resolve the issue (the new bracket to support the STC fitting).

The article here: http://www.forddoctorsdts.com/articl...icle-07-08.php has a photo of the new fitting, and the build dates that it went into normal production. I have seen both parts, and the new one is a solid chunk of steel with a jam-nut so there are no o-rings to degrade.

The problematic STC fitting showed up with the new HPOP design in 05+ engines.

Its a good day of labor to get a shop to do the work (warranty covered ours for 10+hrs labor). If you want to replace it for preventative maintenance it may be worthwhile to do it yourself. I doubt the part itself is all that expensive.

It was the older STC fitting that left me stranded a few months back. '06 with ~41K miles. Engine died and would not restart.

Herb
Herb, that is the newer STC fitting. The original on the 03/04's was bulletproof. The 05/06 cost reduced design was problematic, the upgraded design for the 07 up engines was a fix for that.

Re: 6.0 PSD won't start after long drives

Thanks for the links Eric and everyone else for all the info. Seeing as how I have an early '07, I guess I'll check into this when I get back north. Not something I want to tear into here in Baja. Parts could be a hassle.
One more question, while I'm in there with the HPOP, is there anything else that should be done to save some future labor?? Any known issues?

I found a number of issues when I was in there myself, but most I ascribe to some of the SMB changes to the cooling system for our coolant-pre-heater, and mis-assembly by the various techs in visits our van has had to Ford shops. Just keep an eye on wires, tubes, clamps, and make sure they all make sense. I think by early 07 most systemic issues (other than the HPOP) were resolved.

Issues I found (just an example):
missing bolts on trans dip-stick tube mounts
wire loom not fitted into proper clips to prevent chafing
A lot of broken wire loom clips letting the wire harness chafe on hard-parts
broken trans-dip-stick clamp replaced w zip-tie forcing them to remove AC tube mounts to accommodate, and resultant chafing of AC hard-lines on van body.
broken turbo solenoid wire clip replaced with degrading zip-tie
random bolts just sitting in the engine "valley"
mis-routed wire harness to transmission putting it closer than necessary to exhaust
Oil fill tube seal missing (explains why I always got oil dripping down from passenger side valve cover after an oil-change)

Re: 6.0 PSD won't start after long drives

The van is back on the road and (thankfully) it was covered under warranty. Would have cost about $3500 otherwise. 2 full days of work.

It seems to be running fine and all is well (for now).

Re: 6.0 PSD won't start after long drives

Yep. The ONLY thing they did was the HPOP. Had to isolate where the leak was coming from then drop the motor and fix it. Didn't touch a single other thing.
