6.0 Won’t Crank

Not sure if here or the electrical area was better. Seems more traffic in this one.

2005 e350 w/ 6.0 has sat for almost a year. Batteries went bad and couldn’t move it to a place to easily change them. Finally sucked it up and laid on the wet ground to change them out with 2 new Everstart Maxx group 65 batteries.

Hook everything back up but nothing happens at the ignition. Initially the radio came on and door open chimed but soon as I turned the ignition it shut off and nothing. No clicks or attempt to crank. Turning key off the gauges flutter and then nothing happens. Won’t do anything. No horn or other signs of power. Cycled shifter several times to make sure it’s in park.

Getting 12.6v to the distribution block cable. Only 5v when it is connected to the distribution block.

Pretty confused on what’s going on. Tried Google but couldn’t find anything helpful. About frozen trying to figure it out.

Any thoughts? I would greatly appreciate them!

Thanks,

Joe

Sounds like maybe a corroded ground wire or cable

Hey Joe. Same thing happened to me with my 7.3L. The fix for me was super easy. If the 6.0 is remotely similar to the 7.3 in respect to layout....open the hood and look along the passenger side of the engine bay along the fender wall for the starter relay. On the 7.3L its right by the battery. Remove the wires from the relay and clean the connections really good with a wire brush and then put them back on and make sure the connection is tight. Fired right up after that.

Greetings Joe,

First I would recommended that what ever house battery and isolation switch you have is disconnected from the starter batteries. I would just unbolt the bridge cable at the iso switch and tape it off just to be sure there is no connection between the "van" and the "house/camper"

Then I would charge the new batteries fully with a plug in charger. I'd probably do this with the battery ground cable disconnected from the van. This is to just charge the batteries so they aren't damaged from low voltage. Batteries probably weren't cheap.

At that point you would have fully charged batteries, and the "van" separated from the "house". Then I would confirm clean and tight grounds, battery posts, positive cable connections at starter and alternator ect.

Finally reconnect the batteries and see what voltage drop looks like. If it's still seems low then we move on to other possible issues.

It does sound like connection issue. An easy test before pulling the batteries boxes back down would be to try jumping the vehicle off the jump stud (located on the frame in front of the battery boxes) just to see if the lights and radio come back on. On my van I have each battery grounded independently to the frame but if your ground cable runs from one battery to the second and then to the frame you might want to look at that frame connection

Sorry for the delay as I haven’t had a chance to work on the van until this morning!

So you all were right! It was just a ground wire going to a frame that wasn’t as clean as needed. 2 minutes to get the bolt out and 30 seconds with an angle grinder and it was cleaned and rebolted.

Van fired up in 3 tries after sitting a year.

Thank you all so much for the help! I was worried that it was something major and it was so simple.

Happy Thanksgiving!!

Great news, and always such a relief when there's an easy, inexpensive fix. Thanks for posting your results.

Yeah! Congrats!

These are the small things to keep in mind moving forward same than („asking for a friend“) checking fuses when your van suddenly stops and a lot of lamps light up in your dash :-)))
