7.3 fuel filter

So I went to my local Jiffy Lube yesterday, for an oil change. I asked them about the fuel filter (I've got 34k on the '03 PSD, Q4x4, with the TransferFlow 46 gallon tank). They had the appropriate fuel filter in stock, and thought they could change it out. On my return from lunch, they said they weren't able to do it, it was a dealer only service. Make sense?. (They were happy to do the tranny fluid change on our last visit.) (As you probably can tell, I'm doing the 30 k service piecemeal).

Any thoughts?
Thanks
John

Re: 7.3 fuel filter

I think the filter on the van w/7.3 is a pain to get to.......not like the truck. if I am not mistaken you have to remove a portion of the air intake plenum to access the fuel filter.

Re: 7.3 fuel filter

Not hard to change at all if you have an hour or so of spare time and are at least a little bit mechanically inclined. If you have a new filter you know what the top of the one on your SMB looks like. It is located on the top, in the middle of the engine. I think it has a square half inch drive hole to help turn it to get it out. When I did mine I had to take off the air filter assembly. Then you can see the filter. Then I had to take off another hose, which included taking out the dog house to get to the back of the engine where this other hose was running. Once this is off the fuel filter can be better accessed. All in all not that bad of a job. If you take it to a dealer they are going to charge you some bucks for some labor.

Sounds like the Jiffy lube guys didn't feel like messing with it...Last time I took my Mercedes to Jiffy jube they broke a hose off of the turbo. I didn't realize this until I was 6 hours down the road on my way back to Ohio when I stopped at a rest area. My engine was smoking and oil was all over the engine compartment. When I started looking closer I realized they had tried to fix the hose with electrical tape just to get me out of the door...I was a little upset. Luckily I travel with a tool box and I had a spare piece of hose and a couple of clamps to rig it to work the rest of the way.

Re: 7.3 fuel filter

Had a friend who took his minivan to a fast service place (not sure of the name, so don't want to guess) for an oil change. Turns out they broke the drain plug, so being the rocket scientists they are, they replaced the drain plug with a CORK. They didn't tell my friend, he found it a few days later when he was looking at something under his van. Maybe they were having Cabernet night?

I've never taken a vehicle to one of those places since.

Re: 7.3 fuel filter

I changed my fuel filter today. Why? Noticed a ruff idle and when riding around town this morning, I noticed when I hit this steep hill the van was on low paced crawl up the hill. Giving more gas did nothing. The rpm just would not come up. Reading another post about fuel problem lack of acceleration pointed me to that. God knows when the PO changed it last.

The filter is located on the passenger side next to and behind the alternator. You must take of the air intake housing to locate. Next take of the air intake hose that runs back to the turbo. You can get one of the bolts to loosen, but you will have to take of the Dog house in the van to get to the last one. There is no need to take it off to the turbo (rookie). There is a fixed bracket in the middle of the hose wich will allow you to take off the front half through the front engine compartment.

The fuel filter I took out was black! It was a two part filter that you were supposed to reuse the top. New filter said that was outdated and that it was all one disposable piece. The old two parter was easy to get out, as it seperated to two smaller pieces. The new filter is one large piece that it is almost a magic trick to get it in and tightened properly. After in fire up engine to see if there is any leaking before you reassemble. DO NOT undo the coolant line that is KIND of in the way. Just deal with it and move it, as fuel and coolant dont go well together in the filter hole.

Went back to the same hills and no issues. No lose of power. Could slow and accelerate at will.

Disclaimer: I have taken a shop class, and my dad has a bitchin set of tools!
