7.3 PSD smog question for CA ....

Hi all,

I have a 2002 E350 7.3 that has a Hydra chip tuner. If I put it into "stock" mode, which I think is just "0" on the controller, and hide the display/control unit will I be able to make it through the smog check or do I need I need to remove it altogether? When I bought the van the seller got the smog done with it installed but I feel like maybe he had a "friend". I'm in the process of selling to another party.

Thanks.

Give it a shot! If they don't see it, and it doesn't show up on scan, you're good. If they do, then you need to drive home, unplug it, and go back, so you don't have much to lose in trying.

I have exact same year, same engine (all stock) same tuner, and do exactly what you are proposing.

Always have passed.

I had a BullyDog. I never removed it till I had to. I could pass in stock setting mode. I had to remove mine even though it was variable. It had 3 power settings stock, 75+, 100+ there was also a shut off setting that would not allow it to start which I loved for anti theft. Finally I just left it out. BDog was not really making them for vans just F series I was the first in 2002. They no longer support it so I can't get them to check if there are issues.

Speaking of California Smog.

Does anyone know if it's possible to bring a 49-state legal 1997-2003 7.3L E350 to California without modification?

If it needs modification, is it just the GPM and an OEM-Catalytic Converter?

Our 2002 7.3 came in from Oregon back in 2015. No issues. Smog every two years are visual / OBD connect/read/ no tail pipe sniffing.

The 7.3 does not have a catalytic, never did.

You should be good to go as it sits (stock) as long as no tuner (active), no smoke, no crazy exhaust. If it had a fuel tank swap that is not a CARB approved, you might have an issue but you would have to have run into a very knowledgeable tech that would check for that.

But just to confirm, you had a Federal version of the 7.3L and not a 50-state stickered model?

If that's the case, that's great news since that opens the market far wider for me.

I should have updated... the van passed with no issues and I sold it. Regret letting it go already but am going to see if I can find a 7.3 4x4 passenger. Thx
