I also have a 2000 4x4 van with the 7.3 with 153,000 miles on it. I would purchase a van with the 7.3 or gas engine.....or maybe a duramax if you could find the van you wanted.

All things being equal, I would have far preferred the 7.3L over the 6.0L, but things weren't equal, and I didn't have choice. I'm sure Ford would have preferred sticking with the proven 7.3L, but Federal emission laws made that too hard.

The first year or two of the 6.0L were the most problematic, and they've been fairly reliable since. As reliable as the 7.3L, no. Would I rather have a gasser over the 6.0L, no.

Re: 7.3L vs. 6.0L

Yep...got to agree with Herb.

I will say this, if you firm up the 6.0, it kicks ass. But those motors are used for limited times as big HP race motors....longevity is tosed out the door. Yet if you do upgrade it and try to take precautions against the root cause of the 6.0's failures you MIGHT have a better platform over the 7.3. At least that is what I hear from the diesel pros in the area. Then again they might be full of it.

...and yet the Ambulance industry uses the 6.0L extensively and they get high mileage out of them...
