Ford was struggling to meet newer emission standards with the aging 460, knowing they had next gen motors in development, they didn't want to spend any money on the 460. They reduced the compression, mild cam and a ton of emission crap. If you change (hop up) the 460 the emissions system will struggle to give you a green light.
You would probably benefit the most from regearing.
