Re: Bed Plate Leak
From what I've read, the 'bed plate leak' causes oil to accumulate around the bell housing and occasionally drip on the ground.
If so, I've probably had it for 50k miles. There is usually a hanging droplet of oil on the bell housing of my van. Unless it really starts to leave a big puddle in the driveway, I'm going to leave it alone.
The 6.0 seems to be a leaker and I can live with a small mess given the hassle and other issues involved with a major repair.

I'm probably going to wish I'd done the same...

Interesting. If it weren't for the whole 'first, pull the engine.........' part, this looks doable even for a mechanical clutz like me. Amazing that failure of such an inexpensive and simple item like RTV sealant can create such havoc.

Re: Bed Plate Leak
You can do it.... this guy did a complete Ford diesel engine swap in a parking lot with some friends help and limited tools. Pretty good story to go along with it worth the read.

Re: Bed Plate Leak
Got my truck back yesterday- (They had it a week).
They whined a little about all the aftermarket stuff; bumper, winch, lights, 4X4, etc., but didn't charge me any extra for it. Everything was covered, no deductible, and so far everything works. If all keeps going well, I guess I'll have to say something nice about Ford!
I'll keep you posted-
Bill

Re: Bed Plate Leak
Good news (if there can be good news to a part failure and repair) ... thanks for the up-date.

Bed Plate Leak
Did I miss which dealership did the work? Sounds like more often than not this repair results in multiple new problems. If you found someone that does it right, that sounds like valuable information.

Re: Bed Plate Leak
The work was done expeditiously by Salinas Valley Ford Truck (On 101 at Sanborn Rd.,Salinas, CA)
So far, the only thing I've found amiss was my winch was inop. I ran it back this AM and went right to the mechanic, (as opposed to the service writer), and he found a wire that he forgot to hookup. He immediately rectified that problem, was as nice as he could be, and sent me on my way. I am the first guy to stand on a soap box and rail at the domestic car industry, however in this case, (so far...), I'll say that I'm (unexpectedly) optimistic and pleased with the results.

Re: Bed Plate Leak
My van is in now to repair this leak (two weeks). I felt it was nescessary as I am reaching the end of the warranty and did not want to pay out of pocket in the future to fix. I have my fingers crossed.
