Bottom Fuel Filter R/R on 6.0L Advice

Just checking to see if I'm missing something when changing my bottom or chassis mounted fuel filter. I open the fuel/water drain for 25 seconds as per the shop manual, then unscrew the housing but the diesel fuel just continues to shower out at at a pretty good clip until I get the new filter in and my new O-ring on the housing & screwed back on.

Just checking if this is normal, realize being down low and mounted on the chassis doesn't help but what a pain & get lot of diesel on my skin even with gloves - any suggestions welcome.

Mine drained for a long time. I opened up the drain and let it dribble for about 20 minutes or so. Normal I believe.

OK, I will let it drain longer next time, amazing how much diesel does drain out, at least half a gallon but good to know it will finally quit. Thanks!

Try opening the drain valve then "crack" the seal by loosening the filter housing a little to let some air in. I think I did that last time and it drained out much more quickly.

Re: Bottom Fuel Filter R/R on 6.0L Advice

I've never had more than a cup or two drain out. I've never had a half gallon or more drain when changing the chassis mounted fuel filter. However, I've also always changed it with the van at a bit of an angle (rear higher than the front) due to our driveway slope.

Re: Bottom Fuel Filter R/R on 6.0L Advice

I have only had about the volume of fuel in the filter housing drain out, and speed it up, as above, by loosening the housing after cracking the drain.

I do change the filter on a rather low tank as I don't want to siphon fuel out of the tank (not sure if there is a check-valve, but would rather not find out to the negative. Seems likely there would be, but also something that could fail without any other side-effects or warning.

Tank level.
I have no idea why, but when my tank is full, I've turned it off after draining 2~3gals from the filter, and gave up.
If I change that filter on an 1/4 or less tank, only 1/2 cup will come out before it stops.

I change my filters evry other oil change, so I've had plenty of times to play with this. Now I never bother touching it unless the tank is almost empty.

I changed my fuel filters today and took notice of the drain on the chassis mounted filter. I opened the drain while I did the top filter and it still continued to drain at the same rate until I started to unscrew the cap on the bottom of the housing. Once air entered the housing from the loosened cap, it stopped the siphon I believe. No mess at all.

I believe Ford recommends every 15k miles.
