Change Ford 5R110 Tow/Haul to Overdrive On/Off ?

I don't remember seeing this discussed before so I thought I ask. My other van was Brent's 06 E350 Quigley with V10 and 5speed tranny. Here's my question:

5R110 trannys with V10s have a tow/haul button at the end of the selector while 5R110 trannys with the 6.0 diesels have a overdrive on/off button. If I push this button the tranny holds the lower gears longer which is what its suppose to do but what I want is to simply lock out overdrive from time to time. Perhaps ideally we all would want both features but I would be happy with the overdrive on/off instead of the tow/haul feature. (My SUV has both features so it couldn't have been that difficult to implement.)

Is there an easy, reliable and uncomplicated way to have the tow/haul button behave like the overdrive on/off button? If reasonably doable I know I would be trading away the tow/haul feature but I do not envision ever towing anything heavy. (Heavy being greater than 3500lbs.)

Thanks,
Ray

Many aftermarket tuners can alter shifting strategies, so I wonder if they can write a new tune to functionally replace the effects of the Tow/Haul switch with an OD cutout? I'd check with one of the customer tuners out there.

You can have 5-Star tuning make you a Tow/Haul program which locks out O/D.

Is it possible to do the opposite? I'd like the option of having both on my 6.0

I don't know. But the transmissions are exactly the same, except the labeling on the shifter, so it should be feasible.

None of the Ford's have separate OD and Tow/Haul buttons. The F-series did get Tow/Haul mode with their diesels, but the big customers of the diesel vans wanted OD-off instead.

Something does not make sense. It is my understanding that the 5R110 (TorqShift) has only Tow/Haul mode and no overdrive cancel switch and the E4OD/4R100 did not have a tow/haul mode, it only had an overdrive cancel switch.

Re: Change Ford 5R110 Tow/Haul to Overdrive On/Off ?

My 2008 Nissan Armada has a tow/haul button on the console. The shifter normally stays in 5 and can be selected to 4, 3, 2 and 1. I stay in selector 4 when I don't want overdrive. (I only turn 1500 rpm at 50 mph which is way out of the engine's torque peak.) I stay in selector 3 when I'm going up and down hills in San Francisco.

My 5R110 shifts up into 5th (overdrive) quickly. If I'm not on the freeway more often than not I will have to slow down because of traffic, traffic lights, stop signs, pedestrians, etc. This will force the downshift which is okay but you lose a tiny moment when it downshifts. If I could lock out overdrive and stay in 4th I can dart through traffic a little more readily. (Dart is a relative term, our vans are huge compared to most of the tiny cars around me.)

My 4R75E tranny in my other E350 has the overdrive on/off button. I often turn off the overdrive and stay in 3rd (direct 1.00 gear). Driving with traffic is more pleasant for me because I'm usually already in 3rd gear and know that I can dart around without the annoying momentary downshift delay. Staying in 3rd is not unlike my old C6.
