Coolant leaking between engine and tranny

So my 05 SMB 6.0 PSD is leaking coolant between the engine and tranny (or at least it looks that way). What might that be? Dealer needs to do $300 labor to findout what the problem is. Anyone have a similar problem before? I did notice that the AC wasn't working that well a week ago.

Might be your heater core.

Re: Coolant leaking between engine and tranny

Check the EGR cooler hose first.(EGR cooler to the oil cooler) Then all the coolant hose clamps, they leak some times. May be a freeze plug, may be a head gasket leak at the back.

The pickup trucks have a hose going over the top of the engine to the heater core that rubs through some times???

If the van has rear heat those lines go over the engine as well.

For the Diesel guys, you may or may not have seen this Cooling system PDF before, with some great info. in it. It’s been floating around for a while now so the only author credits I know of are on the last page.

Re: Coolant leaking between engine and tranny

Can't believe I'm happy that it only the rear heater line. $650 fix. Good news, I guess. Bad news is that the part is backordered with an unknown delivery date.

Re: Coolant leaking between engine and tranny

Could it be spliced with a hose or a large compression fitting?
My bet it it wore through by touching something they are not very strong.
Someone recently posted a picture of where theirs was worn almost through.
They are just thin aluminum pipes with a few hose connections here and there for vibration and flexibility.
Its not high pressure or anything. You could cut out the bad section and slightly flare the ends to help it stay together, install a piece of heater hose (silicone would be best) and two clamps.

Re: Coolant leaking between engine and tranny

Just had this happen to me...but I had a different situation, so I thought I might add.

I too was leaking a fair amount of coolant, and first thought it was the radiator. But then after pressure testing the radiator overnight, there were no leaks. So we couldn't get it to leak when we wanted it to in order to find where the leak was coming from.

To make a long story short, it turns out it was the water pump. The water pump can "pass" a pressure test if it's beginning to fail. And it can leak coolant in a random pattern till it just ultimately fails.

Just wanted to add that experience....
