I love my 5.4. It fits my needs just fine and handles my mountain forays like a champ. You see a lot of baloney out there about the V8 but none of it has been true for me. I pull a trailer often and it doesn’t present any problems for me. The V10 is nice, sure. But I wouldn’t wait around for it or pay a big premium. The 5.4 is a very capable machine and seems well-matched to the RB van.

Take a look at any one of our build threads on here and you’ll have plenty of info to chew on.

Something that occurred to me is there are plenty of F-Series 4x4's running around with the 5.4----they seem to a very capable engine over the long term.

Some tales of towing upwards of 20K or more inside a 26' cargo trailer scare me but I'm a chicken (towing wise) so pay me no attention.

(Again) Exciting news Cyrull!!! Can't wait to see your "newly delivered" pics!!!!!! I guess we'll see color, options etc in the pics...Fantastic! Maiden voyage plan?

The 5.4 in Sporty has an average cruising speed of around 75mph...I-70 & I-80 through the rockies and a few mega-inclines on the Dempster, we're the only times we have had it (nearly) floored or downshifted to low 2 and going 35mph...we don't tow stuffs and don't plan on it...Again, "Any van is good van...so I took what I could get, yes I took what I could get and sd....you aint seen nothing yet...oh babababy, you aint seen nothing yet...you aint been around."

Good luck with your decision. My van is a 5.4L but I'm settled with 2wd so not much help there. With the age of the van, mileage (210k) and loaded down, there are times I wish for more power, but it's usually on long grades on the interstate.

Here is a 7.3 candidate for you.

I think coolfeet on this other forum sums up 5.4 ownership nicely

Have to say, from everything else I've been seeing out there lately, that sure seems like its very well priced. Like the color too.

If you don't tow, then you should be fine with proper gearing and the 5.4. If you plan on towing anything over 5000lbs often, then maybe waiting to find the V10 or diesel van might be worth it. I tow a small toy hauler that weighs around 7000lbs and my van with V10 works hard to pull it up grades. The flats and in town is not a problem though.

Also, in my opinion, the 7.3 needs some modifications to really wake it up and make it a good runner. Stock 7.3's in the vans are pretty slow

Oh yes, the 5.4 DRINKS. Very glad I have a costco membership for cheaper gas. I would say the biggest thing I don't like about the 5.4 is its range. Once you do a 4x4 conversion it chops the tank quite a bit and if you don't have something to carry external fuel cans it almost feels like your driving a electric vehicle.....topping up wherever and whenever you can.

We are planning to do a coast to coast trip this summer, hoping all the stuff I want will get here in time for that voyage.

I'll post a build thread here for sure, lets just say its probably one of the most expensive/optioned cargo van Ford has likely sold......
