Dumb question: oil change

As we are complete novices, thought I would risk embarrassment and ask: where do you get your oil changed? We have the Amsoil filter and are not really up for changing the oil ourselves. Do you go to a Ford dealer, truck mechanic, jiffy lube? Is there anything we should look out for? Any lessons learned and insights appreciated.

I have had mine changed at a couple different indie diesel mechanics. Ford dealer can do it as well, just might be a little more expensive. I would avoid a random Jiffy Lube, unless you know the outfit well.

If you want to stick with the Amsoil filter, you should probably buy a couple and supply it to who ever changes the oil as most places won't have them in stock. Personally, I've discovered that my nearby dealer is less expensive than the intown oil change places, but that can change by location and time. Never the less, pretty much any oil change place can do it, it's very simple.

Dealer, DIY, or trusted mechanic.

Stay away form quick-lube centers if you can. They like to up-sell you downgrades (like draining out factory synthetic gear lube and putting in conventional) and they just don't have enough training or knowledge to deal with things like a bypass filter.

And they will put in sub-spec oil unless you pay for synthetic blends. The Triton engine oil spec pretty much has to be synthetic blend. And when you buy the motorcraft oil yourself, it's cheap! But that upgrade often has a steep upcharge at the quick lube center.

Plus, most Ford dealers are very competitive with quick-lube pricing.

My bad, that's probably good advice.

I purchase all the Oil & filters through Amsoil (Free shipping to my home), and have the local Ford Dealer complete the change (they charge me $69 for the engine oil - different, but very competitive, prices for all the other changes like Diff's, Transmission, transfer case, etc). Also supply them with my preferred oil additive or gear additive when they do the change.

I have discovered that many places won't install your filter because that is one area they make money and the liability potential. If you do go to a dealer be sure ask what the price is up front. As much as I hate to say it a had a $300 oil change at a Ford dealer in Fla once.

You can get the Motorcraft Semi-synthetic oil recommended for your engine, and the Motorcraft oil filter, at your local Walmart and save yourself a bunch.

I get my oil changed at the Ford dealer; a little more expensive but they also check everything and rotate the tires. Stay away from the quick-change lube places. Once upon a time Speedi-Lube caused me a $3K transmission rebuild.
