E350 V10 replacement options?
Hi everyone,
As my join date indicates I am a new member to the forum. My girlfriend and I have decided to live the vanlife for at least a year and I have been scouring the internet in search of the right van for us.
What I have decided on is an e350 because 4x4 is readily available for it and very important to us as it will be going down some sketchy Backcountry roads.
Anywho, if we were to get a high mileage V10 (200,000+) miles and something horrible happens (throw a rod) how easy is it to get another V10?
Could I get a crate V10 even though they don't make them anymore?
Are there alot of remanufactured or used options?
Any other route we could go?
Thanks!
Josh

There are millions of V10 engines out there and they are VERY robust. OK, maybe it's just hundreds of thousands. I wouldn't hesitate to put a used one in if I could verify the miles, get a warranty of some sort, etc. You can get one from Jasper or the like and really pay for it. I paid around $5k once for a remanned 5.4 and I would suspect the v10 would be about the same.
Short answer, go for it. They're easy to find and not expensive. I just did a quick search for you on Car-Part.com and got a ton of them around 100k miles for anywhere from $1-2K. The v10's will run several hundred thousand miles without a hiccup though. You might want to be a little more concerned with the tranny on a high mileage e350. Usually 200k or so is getting up there for a transmission.

Would a new transmission (used or reman) cost about the same as the motor? Thanks for the response by the way.

Ford rebuilt transmission are about $3500 plus install, if I recall correctly.
Other aftermarket bullet proof ones are $5000+ (Woods, BTS, etc).
Or, depending on where you are and what went wrong, maybe cheaper at a local shop.

There's not reason to worry about a v10 with only 200,000 miles as long as it has had any semblance of basic maintenance.
If something does go wrong, V10s run about $500 at most salvage yards. Reman long blocks run about $2500. New Ford motors are about $7500.
They still make the V10 BTW. It's the only currently available in the E-350/450, and is optional in the F450-F750.

Thanks for all the info guys. Obviously I would hope to not have to worry about this in the near future but you never know.

It all depends. You don't need a new one if you need one, you could just have a reputable shop rebuild yours. I have a guy who just built a 4r100 for me with performance mods for $1000, and that included working on a transfer case. He did an Expedition trans (4r75) for me for 900 last year. Good tranny guys are out there but I would research before I took it to just anyone. There are a lot of crooks in the transmission world.
Anyway, none of this probably matters. If you find, say, a 100-150k mile van I wouldn't worry about the engine at all and I wouldn't worry about the tranny if it's been serviced (fluid changed) at least once and it hasn't towed heavy trailers, etc. which a majority of SMBs haven't.
Good luck, give us specifics on your finds and we'll be glad to help.

Well, not sure if this is in your budget but the timing might be right! I have seen this on CL for over a month now. NO AFFILIATION.
2004 Ford E350
4x4 quigley with just under 128,000 miles, v10
"we are in libby. Nice extended van, e350, not set up as 15passenger, fully carpeted really nice cargo area, we are open to trades? Suburban, Yukon XL, atvs jetski or newer snowmobile"
Looks like they have had a snowplow mounted on this. Either that or some other funky implement... GOOD LUCK

So I'm guessing $16,300 is the asking price? So nice when people actually just put it in the 'price' section.
