Engine Codes - P0299 and P0611 (FICM and Turbo)

I got the dreaded check engine light on my drive home from Fresno last Monday. I'm looking for advice on how to proceed. I have a 2007 E350 6.0 with 65,400 miles. The Scangauge was showing P0299. I just took the van down to my local shop and they got two codes on their reader:

P0299 - Turbo/super charger underboost
P0611 - Fuel injection control module performance

Unfortunately I'm very familiar with both codes. Back in September 2011 (40,150 miles) I have th FICM replaced under warranty for P0611. They also replaced the turbo center housing and unison ring for P0299.

In December 2011 I had the FICM reprogrammed per TSB 10-12-06.

In February 2012 I had a turbo bearing failure that was replaced under warranty (44,508 miles).

In September 2014 I again had to have the FICM replaced per a P0611 code (58,928 miles). Both starting batteries were also replaced at that time.

I'm out of warranty on the Van and I'm not sure if the FICM replaced in 9/2014 has its own warranty. However, this has obviously been a recurring problem for me and I'm hoping to actually fix it this time instead of using "band-aids" which it appears I've been doing so far. Has anyone had similar experiences and come up with a good solution? Any suggestions on how to proceed? I am in San Diego if that makes any difference. Thank so much for the time and help.

Geoff

You turbo underboost code could just be a loose CAC boot or a pinhole. As for the FICM I would either send it in to Ed at FICMrepair.com or buy the Bulletproofdiesel FICM. I went with Ed. I like BPD's stuff but the lack of a warranty for such an expensive unit is irksome.

Or, buy the BPD FICM power supply (logic side is usually not what goes bad) and send in you old unit for basic repair and have that as a backup

The warranty expired on the van, but what about the replacement FICM?

No warranty on the FICM since it was last replaced under warranty. Basically once the van warranty expired so did warranty on the various parts and labor. That being said it may not be a bad thing since I've had this problem multiple times and really need to get a permanent fix.

Still trying to figure out what needs to be done and who should do the work.

The FICM is pretty easy to remove from the van. Just be careful to not break the connectors. If you don't need your rig for a week or so FICMrepair is a quick turn-around.

Do you have a scanguage and if so what is your FICM voltage? Ideally you want to be seeing 48.5V. Anything less than 45V will kill the injectors. And that is a no win scenario.

Re: Engine Codes - P0299 and P0611 (FICM and Turbo)

Thanks JoeH, I will check the voltage tomorrow. Unfortunately I also have the P0299 code to deal with as well. Of course we have a trip planned in 2 weeks...

I need to call around tomorrow to find a good shop in San Diego that does this type of work and can also give good advice as to what needs to actually be done.

FICMRepair.com can ship out a unit immediately and get the core back later.

Or you can buy mine:

Re: Engine Codes - P0299 and P0611 (FICM and Turbo)

Definitely sounds like you have some sort of underlying power supply problem. Bad battery cables are probably the most common reason, but could be a weak or simply undersized alternator that can't keep up with your house loads.

I would address the FICM first. It could be seeing less boost than expected simply because its not fueling as much as it should for a given throttle position. Less fuel = less exhaust = less boost.

Do you still have the issue with excess black exhaust?

Re: Engine Codes - P0299 and P0611 (FICM and Turbo)

Thanks again everyone. I guess it is possible that the alternator could be going bad. It is the original HD alternator offered by Ford. I will have that and the cables looked at.

I believe you are thinking about Scatter. I did have white smoke several years ago but that has not been a problem since then.
