Engine cranks but won't start.

I have a 2003 Ford E350 V10 SMB with 89000 miles on it. The engine cranks but won't start. I've changed the fuel filter and fuel pump relay. It then started several times in a row. After letting set for a week, again it won't start. I'm hoping it is not the fuel pump in that rather large fuel tank.

Thank you for any ideas.

Bob

Get a cheap fuel pressure gauge and check the pressure. Harbor freight has them.

If you have a code checker I would start there and see if anything flags. Could be a lot of things I've had Fords most of my life and have had issues that seemed to be fuel related and turned out to be Crank or Cam sensors or computer/ ground issues. Good Luck.

I agree, but changing a fuel pump is not that big of a deal. About an hour or two labor, much easier if the tank is almost empty.

Yours may have only 89k but it is 18 years old if it's never been changed. I'd put a new Motorcraft (not aftermarket) one in before I went too far down this path.

I've been through a couple fuel pumps. Each time I diagnosed it as having low or no fuel pressure. The last time it had pressure, but it was below the minimum specified by Ford. (Running should be 28 to 45psi, key on, engine off= 35/45psi) If the pressure is within spec, it's likely not the problem.

I’ve been down this exact same path.
Very frustrating. My rig was low milage 62000kms - but old.
Anyways. To agree with everyone else- it’s the fuel pump.
If you are able and willing - put in a ford pump (they are made by Bosch, or at least a high end aftermarket unit.
Don’t buy a cheap, white box special, or you’ll be doing it again.
Buy the pump and get it back up and running!!!

Question:
I also have a 2003 but the 7.3 46 gallon tank.
Is the fuel pump in my tank also?
285,000 miles. Should it be changed out?
Are there other "things" I should be aware of, failing due to age?
I recall the Army maintenance unites had a sign which read:
The 5 Army "P's"
"Preventive maintenance Prevents Piss Poor Performance".

The 7.3 doesn’t have a fuel pump in the tank because it’s a diesel.
There’s a lift pump along the frame However the actual “fuel pump” is called an injection pump. Much different creature altogether.
There is tons of information about keeping 7.3s running forever. The info can relate to superduty trucks or vans - the info will be all relatable.
Their fuel system was fairly simple and robust compared to everything that came after... so,
You’re lucky to have a 7.3!

Thank you...
I was wondering if that was the fuel pump that I saw attached to the frame.
Should that be changed out after x miles?
Yes I feel blessed to have the 7.3 after reading the posts about issues after the 7.3.
Alan at Sportsmobile West told me when I picked up my van (Sept.03) that I got one of the very last 7.3's installed in a van.

When you turn the key to the "on" position, do you hear the fuel pump priming? If not, then it could be the switch in the passenger side kick panel. I don't remember what its called, but I believe its red and you just press it to reset. Happened to me.
